Felicia Pride Shares Updates from the Walbrook Project

I was thrilled to learn late last year that writer and youth advocate Felicia Pride had won a $1000 grant from Ignite Baltimore to implement a project in her community. This multi-talented creative decided to rally youth in a local community in her city of Baltimore and work with the youth so they would create a video documentary illustrating life in their community. This project, called the Walbrook Project has taken full effect and she shares updates below:

The Walbrook Project continues to move forward and we are thrilled at how things are coming together. The teens have completed several sessions to learn core elements of storytelling. Under the instruction and guidance of Josef Sawyer, a local filmmaker and founder of Black Maybe Productions, they’ve brainstormed to decide about the stories they want to tell of the Walbrook community.

As they’ve developed their ideas, it has been very exciting to watch the interactions of the teens with each other and with their filmmaking mentors. We are delighted to have three local filmmakers serving as mentors—Josef Sawyer, Sanford Grimes, and Dankwa Brooks. The teens are currently interviewing and shooting as they focus their films on: Walbrook then and now, community arts, and landmarks/parks.

On January 8th, through video, The Walbrook Project represented the youth voice at Amplify Baltimore, a quarterly conversation presented by Civic Frame and held at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Amplify Baltimore gathers the community to explore the city’s promise. The topics on January 8^th included Who Are We (demographics) and Where Are We Going (the city plan); Political Literacy; and Public Safety. The teens’ video interviews were shown as the introduction to each of the segments of the conference.

Prince George's County Superintendent Proposes to Cut Middle School Sports

In early December, Prince George's County Schools Superintendent William R. Hite Jr. proposed a fiscal 2012 operating budget that eliminates certain academic programs and freezes pay for all employees. Among the proposed cuts is the elimination of all athletic programs for middle school students, an idea that raised the ire of the county school board. The 10-member panel will convene with Hite this month to discuss his proposal.

The cuts would eliminate the job positions of school staff that coach and run these programs, along with the programs themselves, saving an estimated $800,000. The school board must vote on the budget before sending it to County Executive Rushern L. Baker III for consideration.

The elimination of middle school sports programs would devastate the entire county and prove detrimental to the development of children involved in sports, school board member Edward Burroughs III (Dist. 8) said.
"Middle-schoolers are very impressionable," he said. "They need more supports in place, not less. The coaches who work with the kids in sports programs are more than coaches for many of those kids. Many of our kids don't have someone at home waiting for them after-school who responds to them like the coaches will."

It's always great to be in the know of what programs are in and around the community that offer youth programming that is of high-quality. The new blog "Arts for DC Kids" recently updated us on several such programs that you can choose from. Check the list out here. This great list breaks the programs down into categories of Multidisciplinary, Dance, Theater, Music and Visual Arts and contains some of the more popular programs alongside some lesser known organizations. Kudos to Arts for DC Kids for a great compilation and here's hoping those of you reading who are parents select something that's a win for your young person!

5 Tips to Combat Online Bullying

Online bullying has become news-worthy as of late due to numerous situations where bullying has resulted in those being bullied attempting (and often succeeding) to kill or injure themselves due to embarrassment. However, the irony is that research finds that often those who are hateful, rude and very confrontational on line to others are those who would not feel so confident to do the same thing in person. Some tips for youth and adults who are experiencing a bullying situation on line-- which is basically one where you are being harassed, defamed or threatened-- include these easy to follow suggestions:

Make sure you keep documentation of all the postings, emails, etc. that your stalker posts and/or sends you

2. Make sure, also, that you notify the sites that they post the information on so that an investigation can begin and/or so documentation can be created that you are attempting to have the information taken down.

3. When unauthorized photos are posted, this is an example of copyright infringement that most sites don't allow and will, in most cases, immediately take down. The same usually results if the posting your stalker is posting is racist and hate-mongering in substance. This is especially true when a physical threat is made.

4. Let Others Know. Don't feel like this is a situation you must handle alone. Experts are reporting that often those who are cyberbullied often experience the same feelings those who are bullied in person endure. If this is something that happens to you, don't believe that you have to keep this secret.

5. Contact Your Local Police Department. Some cities/states have specific units that address online crimes. Inquire to see what services are in place to help stop your cyber bully.

REMIXING THE ART OF SOCIAL CHANGE: A HIP-HOP APPROACH 2010 is not your average conference or gathering. This year it takes place for six days from Nov. 16-21. It’s a teach-in where folks from across the world come together in Washington, D.C. to participate in a unique experience that’s both action-oriented and community-based.

The teach-in outlines the tools and resources necessary to develop curriculum, programs, and artistic and scholarly work based on hip-hop culture. The presenters at Remixing the Art of Social Change are the artists and educators who never gave up on hip-hop and are still actively working through it to promote love, peace, unity and having fun. Last year's teach-in featured pioneer Afrika Bambaataa and scholars, youth, organizations, artists and activists from around the world. Creating Dialogue: Using Plays as Tools to Initiate Conversation
Facilitator: Khadijah Ali-Coleman

Listen to the voice of Saartjie Baartman, the woman known as the Hottentot Venus, tell you her story of how her life became a horror tale of caged theatrics and dissection in a museum. Better yet, become Saartjie Baartman as you read her story in a dialogue between her and her South African sister in the stage play Deconstructing the Myth of the Booty. Why not write your own vignette depicting a satirical look at African-American life after reading the scene “Git On Board” in George C. Wolfe’s stage play The Colored Museum? Once writing your vignette, perform it as catalyst for a discussion on modern perceptions of slavery. After reading Jeff Stetson’s one act play “The Meeting”, imagine if the main characters Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X had their fictional meeting in 2010 after Rodney King, 9/11 and the election of the first Black president and write your own act featuring dialogue between the two characters.

In this session, learn how educators can use play-reading as a tool to initiate conversation and analysis of social mores. Educators, regardless of theatre experience, can effectively use plays as tools of engagement, providing youth the opportunity to critically think and synthesize information and personal opinion into creative art.

Erica Goldson: Using Her Moment to Spark a Flame

Every now and again, you come across someone's words that confirms what it is that you always knew to be true but always felt uncomfortable exclaiming, for the fact that you felt you were alone in your thinking. Erica Goldson, an 18 year-old valedictorian out of New York used her moment during graduation to give a speech that has already gained international attention. She says to the packed graduation audience:

I am now accomplishing that goal. I am graduating. I should look at this as a positive experience, especially being at the top of my class. However, in retrospect, I cannot say that I am any more intelligent than my peers. I can attest that I am only the best at doing what I am told and working the system.

She later goes on to speak about that one adult who allowed her, even encouraged her, to express an opinion, critically think and counter textbook doctrine and it becomes clear that her one year of interaction with an educator who did attempt to direct her thinking when she was in 10th grade made an impact on her that will most likely last a lifetime. What she speaks of is the necessity in creating a world of positive youth development that provides young people the opportunity to express, earn, explore, perform and grow.

Checklist on Finding a Youth Program As the School Year Approaches

Parents, finding a quality youth program for your child prior to the start of the school is not an easy thing, particularly if you have a full-time job. Luckily, using the internet and word of mouth are helpful to the process. These tips were found on eHow.com:

Research programs available in your area.
Visit Afterschool.gov.
Contact your child's school about available programs.
Inquire at community organizations such as Boys and Girls Clubs (bgca.org), the YMCA, worship centers, or parks and recreation centers.
Ask friends and neighbors with school-aged children for recommendations.

Once you've done that, you should then:

Visit a few programs while they are operating so you can see firsthand what goes on.
Observe if the kids seem well supervised, happy and engaged?
Determine if there is positive interaction with the staff?
Ask yourself, "Are the activities age-appropriate, safe and fun?"
Note the space itself. Is the environment safe and clean?
Find out exactly what the fees are. Do you have to pay extra fees for field trips or tutoring? Are meals and snacks included?

The Hurston/Wright Creative Writing Workshop for Teens provides new opportunities for students who are interested in creative writing to develop their writing and reading skills in a nurturing group setting that celebrates Black literature. Most importantly, this tuition-free creative writing workshop will enable students to become effective communicators, a skill which will benefit them throughout their educational, and occupational careers.
ADMISSION
Admission is competitive based on the quality of writing samples submitted. In order to provide the highest quality of instruction possible, classes are kept small. Therefore we may not be able to accommodate ALL qualified applicants.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

Creative Nonfiction: This workshop will introduce students to the basic elements of crafting stories from real life experiences. Students will learn how to uncover facts, details and opinions and shape them into an artistic truth told in a compelling memorable narrative voice.

Both workshops provide teens a safe space to voice their thoughts about love, life, school, friends, and important moments from a perspective of the next generation of authors.

Anyone from the Washington DC metro area is eligible for this scholarship which may be used for any number of purposes: to purchase supplies, or art books, to fund or defray the costs of a course at a local college or community center, to conduct research or to suppor a specific project that the recipient has created.

It is open for anyone aged 12-17 years old working with any medium: sculpture, painting, drawing, mixed media, or photography. Candidates must submit 10-15 JPEGs slides or high-quality photos of their work, a short essay on what it means to be an artist, and a description of how the award will further their artistic goals. The selected candidate will be announced in May 2010.

Literacy Arts Activities Encourage Youth to Love Learning

SOYA's Khadijah Ali-Coleman facilitated this past week a session in a series of literacy arts activities she is providing to K-2nd graders at New Horizon Elementary School in Maryland. This week's session continues a series on "Music" where the children are learning about the three categories of instruments (Percussion, Wind and String). In past weeks, the children have categorized instruments, enjoyed an instrument "petting zoo" and participated in a theater game where they devised different ways to transform everyday materials into instruments. This past Thursday, they put their brainstorming into practice when they created percussion instruments from recycled plastic materials.

Before creating their instruments, Khadijah read to them the story 1, 2, 3 Music by Sylvie Auzary-Luton and were challenged to identify the different instruments in the stories and categorize them into the three categories of music instruments. The story is a wonderful read for young children. It is about a young girl's love for music and how she uses it to express herself.

MLK Essay and Poster Contest for All Ages

Due to a recent request, the Washington, DC Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation has decided to extend their submission deadline for the Kids for King Education Initiative. The deadline for children to submit their entries is now April 30, 2010.

A few days ago, a group of teachers who want their students to participate wrote to the contest officials to share that they had just found out about the Kids for King Education Initiative. They realized there was no way their students could meet the deadline and be eligible for the free trip to Washington, DC, and they wanted to know if there was anything we could do.

The National Memorial Project Foundation considered extending the deadline only for them, but in the end, that isn't fair to anyone else who may have only recently learned about the Initiative.

That is why they have decided to make the new deadline - April 30th - apply to everyone equally.

So you now have one full additional month for us to receive your child's:

Essay
Work of art
Video

Once the submissions are finalized on April 30th, they will begin the judging immediately.

Shortly after that, winners will be announced in the three age groups.

Remember, this year's award winners will receive free trips to Washington, DC (with one parent or guardian) to participate in the 2011 Dedication Ceremony - a once-in-a-lifetime event that will provide priceless memories for everyone involved.

Does Sex Education in Schools Encourage Kids to Have Sex?

Does sex education in schools encourage teens to have sex. No, not if the sex education program is founded in responsible reproductive health instruction and implemented in a non-judgemental, holistic and comprehensive format. Unfortunately, there is no consistent curriculum for sex education that is implemented across the nation. Because of that, you have pockets of the country where young people are misinformed by their peers about the realities of sex and reproduction. With teen pregnancy rates on the uprise since 2001, a responsible sex education curriculum is necessary now more than ever for students who are entering their puberty phase.

Critics of sex education being implemented in school are usually those who have little idea what a comprehensive sex education program could ideally consist of. A responsible curriculum would first educate young people of the terms used to refer to body parts within the reproductive system. There are grown people who are still ignorant to this knowledge and because of that, we have children who grow up to refer to their vaginas and penises as everything other than those correct terms and who have no idea about that within their bodies they have a cervix or a urethra or a prostate...the list goes on and on.

Once you understand where and what the different parts are on your body, you then will have a connection to the information given on healthy relationships and sexual activity. You understand the impact STDs have on specific parts of your body. Also, you will be more apt to engage in pro-active behavior regarding diet and other behaviors, allowed to make your own positive choices. Today, there are young people who are misinformed to believe that there is no risk in STD transmission if they engage in non-vaginal or non-anal sex. There are some young people AND adults who believe that a young person can not get pregnant if she is on her menstrual cycle. Ignorant children grow up to become ignorant adults. A person's religious beliefs do not shield them from the possibility of contracting a disease, having an unwanted pregnancy or transmit a sexually transmitted infection. The argument that religious preference is compromised when a young person is educated about the function of their body falls short of logic or reason when terminal illness such as AIDS does not discriminate.

So the answer is no. Sex education in schools does not encourage teens to have sex. It, instead, allows them to make educated choices about their own sexual health.

SOYA Will Be at the Loving Me Conference for Young Women This Month

So Our Youth Aspire (SOYA) founder Khadijah Ali-Coleman provides services to nonprofits, educational sites and individuals in the area of youth development. She also facilitates workshops on the subject of youth development for youth workers, (those who work with young people), or workshops for young people in the areas of the arts and health education. From 2001-2006, Khadijah served as the Assistant Director of Prevention Services at Covenant House Washington, developing curricula that was engaging and informative for youth 11-17 years old who attended the program The Peer-Supported Pregnancy Prevention Program (PSP3), funded by the Income Maintenance Administration, APRA and other federal grant programs. One of Khadijah’s favorite games she developed was Body Jeopardy which is modeled after the TV game show “Jeopardy” and asks contestants to form answers in the form of a question in order to earn points. Body Jeopardy questions cover topics of reproductive health, STDs, healthy relationships and anatomy.

Arts plays a pivotal role in the implementation of youth programming in the District and across the country. SOYA has worked with numerous organizations and individuals over the past five years as a consultancy aiding in arts-infused program curriculum. Today, SOYA took part in Arts Advocacy Day in DC to implore DC council members to keep arts funding alive.

The share of foundation and corporate funding being directed to the arts in DC is in an unmistakable decline. Between 1998 and 2007, the percentage of foundation funding directed to the arts decreased from 14.8 to 10.6 percent. The corporate giving share to the arts decreased from 10.3 to 4.6 percent during the same period. With our changing economic landscape, how can we make a change for the better regarding arts funding in the District?

The best advocate for the arts is YOU. All members of the arts community- staff, volunteer leaders, artists and audiences- have the expertise needed to make the case for
good arts policy. Your first-hand knowledge of the arts and their impact on your life is one of the most important components of any advocacy campaign seeking the support of legislators. Food Dyes & Behavioral Issues

A morning muffin for breakfast. A glass of orange drink to wash it down. Sounds healthy and tasty for a young person's breakfast? Well, think again if that muffin and drink beverage is dyed yellow with food dye.

Yes, food dye--chemicals we find in our everyday foods. Tartrazine is also known as FD & C yellow #5. It has been associated with allergic reactions. For example, in a study published in 1978, 122 patients who had a variety of diagnosed allergic reactions were given 50 milligrams of tartrazine. This dose elicited reactions such as palpitations, weakness, hives and itching in these susceptible individuals; 50 millgrams is a large dose, but could be consumed by someone drinking a few bottles of soda during the day. With 16 percent of children ages 6 to 19 overweight or obese, weight management is a serious issue, but so is management of food additives and chemicals that can prove hazardous to the immediate and long-term health of young bodies.

Tartrazine can be found in prepared breakfast cereals, gelatin desserts, dry drink powders, candy, ice cream, spaghetti, bakery products and pudding. It is important to note that there is a connection between people allergic to aspirin and allergic reactions to tartrazine.

There have also been reports of an association of behavioral changes such as restlessness, irritability and sleep disturbances in children.

It is easy to eliminate it from the diet of children since its presence in foods is required to be on the label. Sticking to a diet of only whole, natural foods will help make its avoidance much easier, as it is only present in processed foods.

Although other food dyes and additives have been implicated in hyperactivity, no definitive association has ever been made. It may be that an allergic reaction has been mistakenly diagnosed as a hyperactivity disorder. It is also possible that some children do respond to a diet free of food dyes and synthetic additives. A diet that shuns highly processed foods and relies mainly on fresh, whole natural foods is certainly a good choice for anyone, but a child who is suspected of being sensitive to additives would surely benefit. It may also be that a diet that focuses on whole natural foods has a psychological benefit in that care is being given to the preparation and eating of foods, rather than a reliance on processed "fast" foods. There may be a more relaxed and wholesome attitude that recognizes the vital role that food plays in our health and well-being.

In sum, it seems that among the food dyes, yellow dye #5 has the strongest link to allergic, and possible behavioral, reactions in children. However, any food ingredient, natural or synthetic, has the potential to cause an allergic reaction.

Implications of dyes in food for Youth Workers

Since youth workers are often after-school providers and those who may provide snacks for the youth in their care, it is prudent that we are up on what snacks we are choosing for the kids we serve. Though foods laden with dyes are often the least expensive, it is prudent to understand the connection between diet and behavior. While many of the young people we work with may be deemed at one time or another as a behavior issue, we can often troubleshoot these issues if we do a map of the young person's diet.

Snow Hits the DC Area and Stifles School Opening

The historic snow blizzard of 2010 that began on Friday, Feb. 5 and ended the day after has halted DC in its tracks. Unprepared for the magnitude of needs brought on by the snow storm, Metro came to a stand-still today as roads stayed impassable due to up to two feet of snow blanketing most roadways. On Tuesday, Feb. 9, the Metrorail system will open at 5 a.m. and may close early depending on Tuesday’s weather conditions. Trains will operate at 30-minute intervals and travel at 35 miles per hour. Train lengths are expected to be six- and eight-car trains.

The snow has created such a myriad of problems that it was reported this afternoon that the federal government will once again be closed, as will DC public schools for teachers and students (administrative offices will still be open). Today's announcement is met with less drama then what was encountered yesterday.

Hope you are enjoying the holidays! Today is the second day of Kwanzaa, an African-centered holiday created in the 1960's to celebrate African history and principles. The holiday is intended to help African descendants stay committed to values to help uplift the community and prepare generations to come.

Parents, educators and youth workers can do wonderful activities with young people to commemorate this holiday and program for the entire year. I developed a summer curriculum for an enrichment program in 2005 that focuses on the seven principles of Kwanzaa with a focus on each principle each individual week. The Beat Ya Feet Kings Debut on America's Best Dance Crew on MTV this Weekend

DC natives will tell you that the official music style in the city is Go-Go. The DC-based band Experience Unlimited (EU) let the world know just that in the 1980’s Spike Lee movie “School Daze” when they performed their hit song “Da Butt” during a scene in the film. Come this month, folks in DC and around the world will learn the official DC dance step-- the Beat-ya-Feet. The DC-based dance troupe, the Beat-Ya-Feet Kings will be appearing on MTV’s popular dance show America’s Best Dance Crew (ABDC), hosted by Mario Lopez on August 9. They will be showing the world just how it’s done in DC.

Hailing from southeast DC, the Beat Ya Feet King members are Dante Hancock, 24, Jose Hancock,26, Richard Ogunsiakan, 24, Brandon Faulkner, 23 and sole female member Porche Anthony, 22. During the school year they give back to the community, recently wrapping up in June a successful after-school program they facilitated in Hart Middle School and other area schools where they taught students how to dance.

The dance crew is managed by entrepreneur Diallo Sumbry who also manages the African drumming group Farafina Kan. The members of the Beat-Ya-Feet Kings are hometown celebrities, garnering a buzz whenever they perform, recently showing their stuff off in the month-long Artomatic which was housed in the Navy Yard area of town on M Street.

The Beat-Ya-Feet Kings have dozens of Youtube.com videos and have performed in events throughout the city and in national venues such as Harlem’s famous Apollo Theatre.

Imagine my surprise when coming across the words above from a young person describing their school. I've written numerous articles and blog postings on the issue of adultism, but recently came across an awesome post that I wanted to share. The blog can be found HERE, but the post I came across was this one ---->http://adultism.blogspot.com/2008/02/anti-adultist-authors-and-schools.html where she talks about the school Summerhill. Summerhill, in England, was established in 1921 and calls itself an alternative "free" school. The model this school uses is the epitome of Advancing Youth Development theory which highights the value of putting services, supports and opportunities in place for young people to be able to do and think for themselves.

I recently left work with a youth-serving foundation that did not find value in my method of work that viewed youth work from this standpoint. The lasting visual of my time of work at this place was an image of a co-worker of mine snatching food from high-school seniors who were hungry after being in 8 hours straight of mandatory programming. As my former co-worker remarked to me, "they know the rules, and they aren't allowed to have food now."

My response to this outlandish adultist enforcement of a rule made with no pre-thought was to simply ask her, "Is this what you choose to do with your power, deny a child of food?"

Her offense and surprise at my question led me to question how often do we ask those in decision-making capacity why they choose to use their ability to make decisions in a way that is confrontational, punitive and in no way in promotion of providing a service, support or opportunity for the young people we are paid to serve.

My challenge to those of you who work with young people is to use my example as a reference to refer to when we consider how we speak up as advocates for youth. Often, it is not always only our actions, but also our questions that can promote change.

Working with youth today often requires a set of skills that probably did not exist decades ago. One of the phenomena to pay attention to today is the high use of social media that is used constantly to build social circles, maintain social circles and communicate trends, ideas and overall general information.

Chances are that you have not only heard about the online social network Facebook, but probably have an account of your own. If you don't have a Facebook account, know that the youth work will most likely have one that they've had for a while now. On this account, they share personal information, post photos and visit this virtual spot more than once a day. What an ideal space to interact with your youth and communicate information you want them to know about.

But, beware. Like face to face interactions with your youth, there is a need to respect professional boundaries when using social media to outreach to your youth. Here are a few:

(1) Don't share too much personal information about yourself on your profile that they students can access

(2) Don't allow students access to post items on your profile that are inappropriate (i.e. risque photos, etc.)

(3) Communicate with your youth online within a work oriented time-frame-- i.e. 9 to 5-- to establish a boundary on your time.

(4) Be responsible with what information you share online. Be mindful that any interaction with your youth online serves as automatic documentation, so anything inappropriate is recorded for later retrieval.

LevelTen Town Hall Meeting in Washington DC Asked Tough Questions

The LevelTen Town Hall Meeting that took place Dec. 17, 2008 at Covenant House Washington in DC was a forum of discussion that stated solutions and action plans. Panelists, who also served as facilitators for small break-out groups, included ANC Commisioner Darrell Gaston-- a 22 year-old new politician who mentors and challenges youth, Latosha Frink of the Frink Group and Diallo Sumbry, founder of the Andinkra Group. I was pleased to be invited as a panelist for this event and enjoyed discussion regarding failing DC schools, challenges youth face when raised with nil parental support and teaching practices that don't consider multiple intelligences.

Kudos to LevelTen for coordinating such a rich event and Covenant House Washington for hosting the event.

Early Introduction to Sexualized Images Impacts Behavior

Though this decision was made, not for the highly sexualized image the dolls presented, but, rather, because Mattel felt the dolls were their own creative property, it is still important to note the significance of judgement.

The Bratz dolls and toys like them that have blurred the line between adult and child-like images have often been blamed for inappropriate behaviors seen in young people. Whether its violent and verbally-explicit video games or graphic movies, entertainment is often viewed as the culprit when negative youth behavior is the main topic.

DC Voice Promotes Conversation About Data on DC Public Schools

“The question is, are we giving teachers the incentives to the jobs we want them to do,” DC Board Chairman Vincent Gray told a crowd of one hundred teachers, community members, parents and youth on Nov. 15. He was a special guest during DC VOICE’s second Green Eggs and Ham town hall meeting held at Ward Memorial AME Church, 241 42nd Street, NE .

This meeting was scheduled to provide a forum to those who lived east of the river and unable to attend the first meeting that was held in NW earlier in the week. The meeting engaged participants in an information session—sharing statistics—while polling participants that day on their thoughts regarding teacher incentives, classroom technology and student development. Statistics shared were gathered by research garnered from the DC VOICE Ready Schools Project – the district's largest ever volunteer-led community audit of public (and charter) school quality where teams of residents volunteered to visit over 100 schools and interview principals about school needs and city support.

During this town hall meeting, DC VOICE facilitators were spread out across the room, at least one per table, and engaged participants in conversation discussing the data and the videos shown in intervals. One video showcased a school in another city that awarded teachers incentives such as help with home mortgages to encourage quality teachers to stay at schools they are commissioned to work.

“None of that was offered to me,” said one Ward 8 teacher at a discussion table. “I wasn’t offered anything extra to work. Help with a mortgage would be great.”

Another teacher agreed that incentives such as home mortgage assistance would be great if offered to teachers who agree to work in east of the river schools.

“One thing I notice is that the teachers aren’t from this neighborhood. So it’s hard to know where the kids are from or what they are going through if you don’t live where they live,” she shared. “I grew up in this neighborhood but I can no longer afford to live in this neighborhood. Making sure the people in those schools live in those communities will change how teachers and students relate, I think.”

How Obama's Presidential Win Impacts Positive Youth Development

Tom Matzzie wrote an intriguing article for Huffington Post about what Obama's win means for the United States in terms of lessons learned. On his list, he mentions how important the internet was in Obama's success and how Obama made the political campaign "sexy"-- a word I'm sure you no doubt have heard your young people use when speaking about each other, inanimate objects and just life's happenings in general.

African-American adults will most likely mention that the election has illustrated the biggest lesson-- that anything is possible if-- in a country with a legacy of enslaving Black people-- a Black man can eventually become head of state.

How can you as a youth worker use Barack Obama's success as a springboard for programming that will promote positive youth development?

Here are some suggestions:

(1) If your youth program or classroom has jobs or duties that require an election for roles (i.e. Class President, Peer Leader, Snack Manager, etc), encourage your students to campaign for positions by developing a slogan that signifies what their candidacy is about. Obama's campaign of HOPE and CHANGE have resonated even after his campaign ends.

(2) You most likely included discussion about the election in your group or classroom leading up to Obama's win. But, it doesn't have to end. You can keep the dialogue going by creating segments in the day called "Obama Updates". Foster a continuous interest in politics by encouraging the youth to stay posted on decisions Obama is making from here on out. Who is he choosing for his cabinet? Why is he choosing this person over another? What is the first executive order he is overturning? What impact will this decision have on the industries affected? These discussions will foster political discourse which will hopefully spark a continued interest in political awareness and involvement.

(3) Create spaces in your group room/classroom that provoke personal reflection and dialogue that you may not necessarily moderate. Try ideas like a political corner with newspaper articles and magazine clippings for students to read at leisure or post weekly on a bulletin board questions that relate to both to a presidential decision that may impact the young person. Examples of questions can include: "If President Obama overturns the current executive order restriction on using stem cells for healing illness caused by cancer and birth defects, how will that impact my life when I'm an adult?"

Helping Youth Make Sense of the Tragedy They See Around Them

You can't go far this week without hearing about the horrible events of this past weekend which led to the brutal murder of celebrity actress/singer Jenifer Hudson's family members. The most shocking story to come out of the news was the multiple shooting of her nephew who was only 7 years-old.

I was sickened, literally feeling ill, when I heard the news. How many times have we heard Amber Alerts and waited with bated breath for a positive outcome. The fact that this double murder quickly became a triple homicide was unimaginable. This wasn't sad because Jenifer Hudson is a celebrity. It is because all of us can recall someone we know in a unstable family situation. This is the ending we never want to hear about.

Our children are watching this too as this news hits our airwaves. How are we helping them process this news and news like this that is witnessed from a distance and deals with life and death?

I wrote about this in 2006 when the Ballou High School shootings hit close to home with the young people I worked with. What I suggested then and reinforce today is that we as adults take the lead in helping young people process this information. My belief is that, without discussion and the ability of young people to talk about it and ask questions, we are promoting the action of being desensitized or being unable or uncomfortable with handling emotionally difficult situations.

During this week, in your in-school or after-school program/classroom this week, gauge how your students are doing by:

1. Asking them what are their thoughts on the situation.===> This promotes ease with articulating what you are seeing, hearing and feeling.

2. Asking them what are some things that are probably helpful for the family ====> This promotes the reality that we are all able to offer support to others, no matter how far away they are or how well we know them. If the class wants to make a card, send a group email, etc., this type of activity builds empathy.

As adults, we can help young people build their empathy and coping skills and encourage them to put things in perspective.

Be Bold, Be Red Campaign Takes a Stance For Women & Children

In October 2007 people all over the United States gathered physically and in spirit to speak out against violence against women and children of color. Some wore red all day and explained that they were reclaiming and reframing their bodies as a challenge to the widespread acceptance of violence against women of color. Some wrote powerful essays about why they were wearing red and posted them on the internet. Some gathered with bold and like-minded folks and took pictures, shared poetry and expressed solidarity.

This year, on the first anniversary of the Be Bold Be Red Campaign, all are invited to make a bold stance against the violence enacted on women and girls of color in our society visible.
In D.C., Chicago, Durham, Atlanta and Detroit women of color will be gathering to renew their commitment to creating a world free from racialized and gendered violence. This time, participants will be using a new technology called CyberQuilting to connect all of these gatherings in real time.
DC Cyberquilter, Zachari Curtis is organizing a gathering at the Emergence Community Arts Collective Space across the street from Banneker High School Washington, DC on Thursday, October 30th.

This event will be webcast to similar gatherings in other cities. Organizers are calling on you because they recognize and appreciate the work that artists and the organizations you work with are doing everyday to make this a more loving and less violent world for women and girls in oppressed communities.

Youth Leaders Create Change

I firmly believe that some people have innate leadership ability and some don't. I firmly believe that some people have a certain level of charisma that is necessary to attract people and lead their behavior for better or worse. Given that this is my belief, I do believe that for most people who ultimately lead groups of people, leadership skills are not necesarily innate and often developed when given the opportunity to implement and modify.

Regardless of where you are located, I implore you, if you are a youth worker professional, to become acclimated to doing your research. Youth workers nowadays don't all have degrees in education or have classroom experience. A lot, if not most, of the professionals who work with children are those who have educational backgrounds in varied fields, but have a passion with working with young people. And, we appreciate you.

What is critical, though, is that, regardless of your background, you remain relevant to the young people you serve by staying on top of what it is you need to know. Are you a bit rusty when it comes to ways to energize a room of young people or are you unfamiliar with psychological terms that may apply to different developmental stages young people are experiencing? It's okay-- initially-- but ultimately, its up to you to get schooled in the areas that matter.

Start The School Year Off with a Bang!

Aug. 25 is the first day of school for many districts this year. Whether you are a teacher or after-school youth worker, this week is a busy preparation week where you will be intent on getting your youth space ready for your new student participants.

Few folks would believe that I had truancy issues while in high school. Because of the work that I do with young people and my college educational background which can seem impressive at first glance, the belief is that I was a happy, successful and engaged teen.

That was not the case for the majority of my high school years.

In fact, my own personal experiences as a youth guides most of my understanding of young people's need to feel engaged and connected when expected to learn, participate, and attend school-based and out of school time events. I understand first hand the importance of creating an environment of membership and belonging for young people, making them feel wanted and connected to their program and/or school when I think back to my high school counselor who told me I was probably not doing well in an English course because I was probably not good enough to be in the class. I was new to the school and had a record of excelling in my courses at my previous schools, particularly English, yet, rather than listen to my concerns, I was blamed and dismissed for having them. From that moment on, I would skip English class routinely-- only appearing from time to time if I knew attendance was being counted or I didn't have the opportunity to leave the school premises because the security guard was doing extra rounds.

Young people will find ways to avoid you at all costs if you are not showing an interest in them or creating--or, most importantly, guiding them to create-- a space that they are interested in. If you don't provide a forum for them to discuss, dialogue, express, earn, direct, etc., then you are taking away their opportunity to grow, learn and ultimately trust themselves and you.

If you are a grant funded program or initiative that is dependent on attendance numbers to justify budget requests, then this discussion is important to have with yourself and your team when thinking of best practices. Drawing the students to your program and having them stay there is vested in the levels of interest you are showing in your young people and the modules you have in place to spark and keep their interest in you.

So Our Youth Aspire, LLC founder helped organize the Capital Hip Hop Soul Fest held on Saturday, July 26th in Washington DC's Marvin Gaye Park. Several organizations that serve young people were present, including the Higher Achievement Program, Child Youth Investment Trust Corporation, Interstages and Planned Parenthood. There were tons of things for young people to enjoy and Miss DC Teen made an appearance. The event was conceived by Liberated Muse Productions and co-sponsored by Washington Parks & People, the organization that heads custodial leadership of the park. Here are some pics from the event. Shining Starz Dance Troupe's 6th Annual Showcase

I was pleased to host for the second year in a row the Shining Starz Dance Troupe Summer Showcase on Saturday, June 21, 2008. The Shining Starz Dance Troupe is a dance school founded and facilitated by Ms. Pat Jackson, a resident of the DC metro area. Ms. Jackson has been teaching dance since the early 1990's and holds her Saturday classes in the audiotorium of Covenant House Washington located on Mississippi Ave, SE.

The youth who participate in her dance troupe range in age from 3 years old to 30+. It was a pleasure seeing young people dance to such "old school" hits as "Ain't No Stopping Us Now", "Going to the Chapel" and the "Love You Save" while getting their work-out on on some hits such as Chris Brown's "Wall to Wall", Missy Elliot's "Shake Your Pom Pom" and a couple of hits from the Cheetah Girls. One memorable moment was when some moms from the audience got up on stage in between acts to do a dance off to Flo Rida's "Low". Funnny!

Congratulations to Cheyenne Smith and Shante Ferguson for being recognized for perfect attendance. Amari Bryan-Chavis earned a Tremendous Improvement award at the event as well.

Youth Work Requires a Certain Mentality, Not Just a College Degree

Seldom do we discuss how important it is to be able to retain a certain frame of mind when working with young people. This blog today will shout from the rooftops the fact that any and everyone can't do this type of work. Having a college degree and various certifications does not annoit you with the skills needed to effectively and positively work with youth.

From my years of work in the field and often serving as a hiring agent, I've compiled a list of characteristics youth workers should have in addition to the stated educational requirements:

(1) Patience
This quality is a non-negotiable in the field of youth work. While it is most likely you will be working with a nonprofit or school-system if you are doing youth work, the reality is is that most places of work for youth workers are those where the need is great but the money is little. What this means is that you are often working to program in an environment that approves budget requests slower than you can throw at them. Whether its working with program administration or working with youth who can be emotional, testy and confrontational, patience is a mandatory attribute to have. If you are a short fuse, youth work is not for you.

(2) Creativity
You don't have to be Picasso or Whitney Houston to be a youth worker. Having an artistic talent is really not required at all, honestly. However, having the ability to think outside the box is crucial when programming to young people. Whether its coming up with an educational yet zany fun activity or creatively marketing your program to the community, creativity is essential to program success. Stick-in-the-muds who see things two dimensional rarely do well with young people.

(3) Maturity
If you aren't mature, you won't be able to model for the youth behaviors they should aspire to. Immature staff members are more apt to argue with young people, take things personal and cause dissention on staff.

(4) Love Yourself
If you don't love and respect who you are, it will come across clear as day to the young person. You can't love the youth population you work with if you can't love yourself first. Loving yourself entails doing things you love-- having interests outside the job-- and feeling good about how you are as a person. Those with higher self-esteem are more apt to be good listeners and less likely to take situations with youth personally.

(5) Versatility
Being versatile is a mandatory trait. Things change. As a youth worker, you are most likely the one who has to ride the wave of change and operate at full steam. If having a routine or the same day to day activity is what you seek, working with youth is not for you!

Battling On-Line Bullying

A Mulberry High School cheerleader is recovering from a beating by eight of her classmates. The entire incident was videotaped and the eight Florida teens planned to post it on YouTube.The video, filmed March 30, shows 16-year-old Victoria Lindsay being attacked by six girls while two boys stood as lookouts. Lindsay was backed into a corner while the attackers blocked the door way. She suffered several blows to the head and was knocked unconscious after being slammed into a wall.

“It’s absolutely an animalistic attack. They lured her into the home for express purpose of filming the attack and posting it on the internet,” said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.

After the attack, Lindsay was forced into a car by three of her attackers and driven to another location. The teens told her she would be beaten again if she attempted to call police. She suffered a concussion, bruises and damages to her left eye and ear.

The eight high school students were arrested April 2 after one of the defendants turned the footage into police. Seven of them were in juvenile attention while an 18-year-old boy was charges as an adult. He was released from jail on bail.

All eight teens are charged with battery and false imprisonment. The three teens who forced Lindsay into a vehicle have additional charges of felony kidnapping.-----------------------------------

Many who dialogue on this news story can be found on both sides of the fence. Some believe the girl should have been more careful with what she chose to post on-line about the girls who beat her up. Others view the girls' retaliation as cowardice and an example of the mob mentality. Many believe that the young girls who are now imprisoned for assault deserve to be charged as adults.

Whichever side of the fence you sit, you can not deny that intervention would have been helpful before it resulted in such violence.

How could one intervene, though? When would one have intervened?

As a youth worker, whether you work after-school or in-school, you can be pro-active by coming up with programming geared toward cyber etiquette. One sample activiy is:

Title:Say It How?
Activity description: Young people identify "safe" spaces to resolve conflict, share feelings, broadcast information about themselves and broadcast information about each other. In groups, they are given three scenarios, (i.e. Tell your boyfriend you are angry with him, Journal on how depressed you are, Share how you enjoyed a movie you just saw,etc.) and are expected to identify the places you would "say it". Once the spaces are identified in the smaller groups, the answers are opened to the larger group and open for discussion. The youth worker guides the discussin in a way that young people understand the risk in sharing certain beliefs, feelings, etc. on line and help them make the decision choose positive choices.

Blurring Professional Boundaries...continued

Special thanks to Megan E. at Evergreen State College in Washington state who reminded me that I did not post the final seven tips that indicate that you may have blurred professional lines. Here they are for your review with the first three that were posted earlier.

In our world where we work with young people who come from backgrounds that include parents who are absent, parents who depend on their kids to help raise their other kids and parents who confide in their children, it is our duty to make sure we provide an environment where there is boundary yet support. Some of the young people we work with are so used to being their parent's best friend or raising their younger siblings that they don't understand that there is a difference between adulthood and childhood because they have not been able to truly live as children.

Most people maintain professional boundaries with youth to avoid any accusations of sexual child abuse or harassment. This is a common sense reason to maintain professional boundaries, but there are other reasons that exist as well. When we blur those boundaries and give youth the false idea that we are their friend and on equal stance when it comes to confiding and sharing, then we are doing a disservice to that young person. If we are more than a unbiased youth worker and now their friend who they can chat with and who, in turn, chats and shares with them, then that young person must now reciprocate with being someone who provides an ear to listen to for you. We no longer are able to provide services, supports and opportunities to young people once we have diluted our role as a youth worker. We also make it harder for our colleagues who understand and implement professional boundaries yet must make amends for
your unprofessionalism.

You may be blurring the lines of professionalism in youth work if you:

(1) Pass your number out to young people to call you whenever
they want and this is not a service rendered by your agency but one that you personally allow.

Read your job's agency handbook and see if there are guidelines regarding youth interaction. If giving out personal phone numbers is a no-no, then you may be fired if your supervisor finds that this is going on. If it is not listed as a no-no yet it is not something that everyone is doing, check with your supervisor to make sure it is okay. I don't recommend passing out personal numbers unless in extreme cases where you are rendering case management to the family and you need periodic updates from the family to document particular changes.

(2) Give money to youth when they ask.
The reality is is that all youth are not the same. Just because you work with at-risk youth does not mean that it is your personal job to give money to one whenever they ask. This creates a cycle of dependence, blurs the professional boundary and creates problems when other youth
become aware that you may be giving youth A money everyday and now they want some as well. If a young person you are working with needs bus fare regularly and you are supplying the demand, then there is a problem. For those in nonprofit, discuss with a supervisor the needs youth are having attending your program because they can't cover transportation costs. If this is a problem more than one youth is having, then this is a programmatic issue that needs to be addressed, not one that you personally must amend. For those with case management
components of your program (or for schools, those with guidance counselors or social workers), a need for money is something that needs to be addressed by those who provide family services.

(3) Take the young person to your house.
This is the biggest no-no in my book. I don't believe there are any youthfocused organizations that condone this. You are opening your agency and yourself up to a boatload of liability when you take a youth in your program home. You are also blurring those boundaries in ways that are too numerous to mention. There is nothing that should be taking place in your house that can't happen within the appropriate confines of the work environment that you and the young person is familiar with.

(4) Disclose personal information
The young person doesn’t need to know about your impending divorce or about how great the club was last night. Remember that the young person is someone you are providing supports, services and opportunities to. They do not need to become YOUR personal support and
unpaid therapist. Disclosing this type of information also gives the impression that you are friends, further blurring the lines of professionalism.

(5) Engage in flirty behavior with the youth
Telling a young person they look nice is different then making a suggestive comment along the lines of “If I were younger, I’d be taking you home tonight”… Engaging in flirty behavior will give the impression you are interested in the young person in a way that is not fitting between
a youth and the adult paid to provide social services, counseling, mentorship or instruction. If you are speaking to a young person as you would to someone you are trying to date or be intimate with, chances are it is inappropriate talk.

(6) Gossip about other young people publicly
A young person comes to you because they have a problem with a peer. You know this peer and don’t like them either. It is not your place to share with the young person who came to you that you are in agreement. This is unprofessional and identify you as someone who all young people can not be comfortable to confide in because you have made it known who you like and dislike. Ideally, there should be no favorites.

(7) Initiate inappropriate play
At one school I worked at, the teacher would “jone”—tease—on the students playfully as they teased her back. Often, one student would tease her so harshly, she would often punish the student with detention once he joked her so hard that the entire class couldn’t stop laughing.
This punitive response was very harsh and unfair being that the teacher begin the “play”. As a youth worker, it is your responsibility to have the judgment to recognize what is appropriate and inappropriate play.

Teasing in any form has the potential of hurting feelings. If you can’t handle the play and aren’t teaching anything valuable while engaging in play with young people, it is best to find other means to break the ice and build rapport.

(8) Talk about your co-workers with the young person
The young people you are servicing do not need to know that you hate your co-workers who work with them too. This creates tension and forces the young people to pick sides (or at least pretend to). This blurs the lines of professionalism and creates an uneasy environment.

(9) Lie to protect the young person
You are getting yourself into deep catastrophe if you encounter a situation where you believe lying for the young person is the best measure. Understand that the truth usually comes out and typically makes the situation worse. Also, if you are lying for the young person, you are later telling the young person to keep your confidence and keep up the lie. This is not only creating a potential professional mess for yourself, it is also teaching the action of lying to the young person.

(10) Engage in sexual relations
No need to explore the reasoning as to why this isn’t a great idea. Under no circumstance is sleeping with a young person in your care acceptable.

Defining Membership and Belonging

A good youth program is one that promotes membership and belonging among its youth participants.

A successful program typically speaks of the activities that youth participate in that are safe, educational and fun. The status of being that typically indicates the level of fun is that of membership and belonging. When a young person feels as if they belong to a group and are an active member, they are more apt to be open to positive experiences that provoke happiness and enjoyment.

Enabling: The Bane of Youth Work

Being supportive is often misconstrued as enabling and vice versa. Recognize the difference and make sure that your actions are not labeling you as an enabler.

Enabling does not promote positive youth development. Enabling includes behaviors by youth workers that allow young people to avoid the negative consequences of their actions. It can include :

Offering a young person a reward incentive they did not earn.

Allowing a young person who consistently is disrespectful and inappropriate to staff and peers remain in a group setting

Allowing the youth to come up with rules and consequences as a group and overruling their decisions for some youth who don't follow them.

Enabling typically is a culprit when a standard has been set and you allow a young person to not reach the standard (though they are able to) but still be rewarded and/or avoid penalty.

The Importance of Resiliency

In today's times, youth are facing a whole host of experiences with the potential to traumatize and stunt positive youth development. Resiliency is the key for combat.

Resiliency is the ability to recuperate from a traumatic or difficult experience. The ability to be resilient is often an indicator of future success as an adult. When you are able to come through hard times feeling wiser and stronger rather defeated, beat-down, hopeless and depressed, you are more apt to view struggle as something that can be defeated. It is no longer something that defeats.

Positive Peer Pressure

Youth workers and programs can utilize peer support in promoting positive youth development. Peer supporting is a two-way stream in learning and empowerment.

Gang formation is an example of the negative direction the search for membership and belonging can take. The concept of a fashion trend with a large following also exemplifies the need of the masses to feel connected and part of a group while expressing themselves and attracting attention. Ultimately, both choices typically begin, subtly or more overtly, as peer pressure. Peer pressure is a successful tool for bullies because it preys on this human need that surfaces most readily in adolescence to fit in and belong to a group. The positive aspect of peer pressure, however, is peer support. Peer support is peer pressure turned on its head.

When Ann Brogioli showed up in the Washington Highlands for a candlelight vigil not long ago, teenagers ran to greet her with unabashed affection. Neither D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty nor D.C. Council member Marion Barry, who represents the Southeast neighborhood, was received as warmly when each arrived.
"Miss Bo-jolly," a boy called out, clearly relishing the mispronounced sound of her Italian name. He was standing with a group of stone-faced youths in the courtyard of the public housing complex where 14-year-old DeOnté Rawlings had been shot and killed by an off-duty D.C. police officer.

Race & Education Impact Health, Documentary Illustrates

Documenatary to appear on PBS in Spring 2008

A new PBS documentary film, to be aired next spring, presents evidence that insists that race, money and education matter when it comes to health. On Thursday, September 27, the DC-based Consumer Health Foundation (CHF) held its 12th annual open meeting at George Washington University where a portion of the four-hour film series, “Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?” was screened. Invited guests of the meeting included staff from various organizations from across the city and surrounding suburbs, including Fight for Children, the National Kidney Foundation, the Nonprofit Roundtable, DC Action for Children and Maryland Citizen’s Health Initiative. The film was produced by Vital Pictures and California Newsreel. It is being presented by the National Minority Consortia, in association with the Joint Center Health Policy Institute.
“It’s a fact that race, sex, income and education dictate how your life is going to be,” said Margeret O’Bryan, CHF’s President and CEO, in her opening remarks prior to the film’s start. “African-Americans live six years less than their white counterparts. Sixty percent of African-Americans and twenty-three percent of Latino Americans,” she continues, “report being in poor health compared to 4% of white Americans.”
Supporting her statistics, the film takes the quantitative information and makes it easy to understand as an average viewer. The film features Dr. Adewale Troutman, founder of the nation’s first Center for Health Equity.
“Health is not just the absence of disease,” Troutman says in the film as he explains that health is about both physical and mental well-being. Showcased in the film as well as serving as the featured keynote for the CHF meeting, Troutman leads a team of research professionals who documented the data that was profiled in “Unnatural Causes”.
People from different communities—be them lower income or upper-middle class—were interviewed, speaking to their own various health issues or the health of their loved ones. One example is of an African-American man who speaks of how his mother’s health began deteriorating after she was laid off of her job. All of the stories illustrated through the film showed how things like money, availability of fresh food and stress impacted over-all well-being.
Rachel Poulain, Director of Outreach for California Newsreel and one of the producers who worked on the film says that the film was inspired by the success of California Newsreel’s previous documentary “Race-- the Power of Illusion”, which addressed how, though there is no biological evidence that there are subdivisions of the human species, the power associated with racial labels impacts the way in which individuals live, achieve and become engaged within society. She says that “Unnatural Causes” was created intentionally as a series to encourage people to get involved in analyzing and taking action against health disparities. “The real power of the film will be when people use it to foster dialogue,” she said.
The premiere date on PBS is scheduled for late spring or early summer 2008. The producers have not yet gotten a definite date from PBS as to when the actual airing date will be. DVD release will take place this winter, specific date to be announce. Are You Starting A New Program?

Starting a youth-centered group, organization or program begins with careful pre-planning. Questions you want to begin to ask yourself are:

(1) Who is your target population?

(2) What are the intended outcomes you hope to achieve?

(3) How will the program/organization/group become sustainable?

WHO IS YOUR TARGET POPULATION?

Your target population is the group that your program is intended to serve. Yes, you will be working with youth, but will it be youth from a particular neighborhood, youth of a certain age or educational background? You can only tailor your services once you identify who your target audience will be. This is crucial for those developing a new program, for it allows you to become more specific and intentional and helps you avoid being all over the place as you come up with your ideas.

WHAT ARE YOUR INTENDED OUTCOMES?

Outcomes are the things that you want your target population to be able to do once you implement a program activity. For example, if your program provides tutoring, an outcome could be that 85% of program participants will advance one grade point in the subject they have been tutored in. Outcomes all you to measure the success of your program.

HOW WILL THE PROGRAM BE SUSTAINABLE?

Is your program free or will there be a program cost? Is the program dependent on volunteers or will you need paid employees? You will need to identify the costs involved in starting and maintaining your program by developing a budget. Once that is done, identify the areas of income for the program--whether they are from program fees paid by participants or grants. Comparing the income with the program costs will allow you to understand how much is needed to maintain the program. You will then need to identify places you will solicit money from if your current income is not sufficient.

This then moves you into the next phase of your development...

AND FINALLY...

For those wondering why there had not been many posts on this blog between July 2006 and December 2006, the answer is I had been writing for the www.suite101.com Youth Development site-- actually founding it--at http://youthdevelopment.suite101.com

Suite101 is currently looking for a new writer for the site, for, now I am devoting more time to SOYA and other ventures I'm currently working on. Teambuilding Is On-going

Youth workers just entering the field have often asked how long does one implement team building activities within the youth program they may work. My answer?

As long as it takes.

Encouraging a feeling of membership and belonging among your youth may be something that can take a substantial amount of time, given the dynamics of your youth program. Especially if you are a program where intakes are ongoing and new youth are constantly joining the group, teambuilding activities are essential.

The best way to get buy-in from the youth who are regulars and the youth who are new is to involve the youth who are not new into the responsibility of implementing the teambuilding activity.

Icebreaker of the Month:

Move Your Butt
The youth in the after-school program I once worked loved this activity no matter when it was implemented. It is a movement activity and will require you to have space for people to swiftly move from one seat to another without fear of injury and restriction.
(1) You form a circle of chairs where everyone has a seat except for one person.
(2) That one person begins the game by standing in the middle of the circle and sharing one thing about themselves that they think other people share. So, for example, they can say "Move your butt if you are a high school student like me"
(3) All of the people seated who share the trait that the person in the middle mentioned must get up and dash to another seat that is empty. If there is not an available seat, they are the next person in the middle.
(4) The rule is that you can not dash to a chair that is directly next to you and you HAVE to stand up if the statement applies to you!
This game can go on and on unless a rule is agreed upon at the beginning that a certain number of people will have a chance, etc. This game is a great way for people to get to know each other and you get so caught up in it that any self-consciousness fades quickly.

Say It Loud-- I'm an Adult and I'm Proud!

One of the things that really disturbs me is when youth workers make the comment that the reason they have built a rapport with the young people they work with is because they make an effort to look like them, talk like them and do the things they do. Relating to another person doesn't entail becoming that person.

Often we see that adults who do not work well with young people are those who are adultist in thinking-- they believe that their ideas, actions and traditions are better simply because they are older. Adultism stunts authentic communication and makes young people often feel as if their thoughts and ways are less than when compared to those of adults. When fostering positive youth development, adultism, then, does not fit into the equation.

However, what I'm seeing now, to avoid adultism, is the new trend in the field of youth work where youth workers in and entering the field, alter who they are or stunt their own personal growth to maintain or begin relationships with youth who may be more difficult to get to know. Whether it is mirroring the way young people dress or choosing to speak the same-- using slang terms and certain accents-- these adults believe that it is more advantagous to be like the youth in more ways that are visible in order to make that first and lasting impression.

I disagree with this reasoning.

I ask that you think about the adults who helped you during your youth who made the biggest impressions. Was it the ones who emulated the way you and your friends behaved, or was it the ones who were compassionate listeners, supportive shoulders to lean on and fair decision makers? Though our times have definitely changed and youth are more progressive in many areas while less developed in areas that were more accessible to us when we are young, the fundamental needs structure is the same. Youth need us to be adults, not big children.

It is our duty to show pride in that which makes us who we are-- adults. If we demonstrate that it is more advantagous to look and act young and immature, then we feed into the notion that many youth already have of adulthood being tired, boring and a drag.

The challenge is making sure that as an adult, you are not fitting the sterotype of being oppressive, close-minded and stuck in your ways. You can be progressive, "cool", and easy to relate to without selling out and masking that which makes you a mature and interesting adult. When young people watch adults who are happy in their skin and are not playing a role, they respect who you are and look forward to their own growth as young people. Youth don't want youth workers who want to be them. They want and respect youth workers who show them that being who they are and who they will become is not so bad after all.

Tips to Enhance Active Membership: TEAM!!!

A band is made up of different members with different roles that create music that blends perfectly. A band is a team. Teamwork is essential in almost every work field but has an extremely high value in the realm of youth work.

In the field of youth work, turnover is often high and avoiding burn-out is an ongoing battle. It is of the utmost importance to make sure that you have the support necessary to do your job in the best way possible. When working on a team of youth workers, making that team structure work at its optimum is a challenge few can attest to. Below are some tips on how to be the best member of a team you can be when faced with the day to day challenges of youth work. The youth we serve are already a challenging component of our jobs, though we love them and our work dearly. Interacting with the other adults in our work place shouldn't overshadow the work we do with the youth. Read below the strategies to maintaining your place as a meaningful part of any work team.

Bring Talent to the Team
Be good at what you do. Teams need talent. The more of it you bring to the group, the more you can contribute. Build your skills and in a very real sense, you are building the team. You can’t have a high-powered team with low-talent people. The weakest link in the chain sets the limits on what the group as a whole can achieve.

Play Your Position
Dig up all the details on your assignment. Nail every bit of it down so you will remember it. Then, play your position. It’s tough to achieve a coordinated team effort when people leave their stations…stray into someone else’s area…or just get sloppy and let things slip through the cracks. Teamwork by definition implies interdependence. What you do affects other people. Some people in the unit depend on you for their success, their effectiveness. What you fail to do can cause them to fail. Chances are if you fall down on the job, you pull others down with you. If you’re out of position, you may throw the timing off for the entire group. If you’re careless about covering your assignment, teammates have to abandon their duties to bail you out.

Push for High Quality Communication
Communication breathes the first spark of life into teamwork, and communication keeps teamwork alive. Nothing else is so crucial to coordination of effort. No other factor plays such a precious role in building and preserving trust among teammates. Communication is the make or break issue. It’s not enough for the right hand to know what the left hand is doing. The right hand needs to know what the left hand intends to do. People need a keen sense of what’s planned if they are to execute with precision. There’s no hope orchestrating a coordinated team effot unless good communication precedes action.

Turn your Team’s Diversity to the Team’s Advantage
Differences on a team can add depth and create strength. They can also broaden the group and bring balance. A dozen drummers couldn’t create much of a musical group. A six person team of people with the same opinions, values and viewpoints shows less promise of crafting good solutions than a more diverse group could. But for diversity to have value, you have to respect those different within the team and not sideline people who are considered different.

Back Up Others Who Need Help
Anybody can make a mistake, get overloaded, or just need a helping hand. The question is will you be in a position to cover for your teammates? The first step in being an effective back-up person is think team. Instead of focusing narrowly on you your personal assignment and nothing else, watch what’s going on with the rest of the group. There’s not much chance you’ll bring help unless you see that someone has a problem.

Practice
It’s one thing to show up for work every day and do your job, or, to show up on game day and go against competition. But, it’s another thing to show up for practice. To drill and rehearse, running through your plays time after time, watching the people perform as a team and pushing for better performance. True professionals never stop practicing because they recognize that practice is a winning way to move toward perfect.

Ask Questions and don’t FUDGE It!*
There is never a dumb question except the one unasked. Working with young people professionally does not afford the luxury of blindly entering a situation with no idea of what the expectations are of your role. If you are unclear about what you are to perform as a youth worker—ASK!!!! Ask before you begin. Especially if you are a youth worker imparting curriculum or specific information, it is your duty to make sure you are schooled in what you are talking about and aware of what outcomes your supervisor would like you to aid in being reached. Read the post in this blog regarding FUDGE-ing and why it can be the downfall of a facilitator.

Be Prepared to Sacrifice for the Team
The struggle of “me vs. we” is no stranger to team members. You can expect occasional conflict between your selfish interests and what’s best for the team. However, people figure out in a hurry just how much you can be trusted to protect the team. If you “sell out” the group to your selfish interests, how can you expect your teammates to be there when you need them?

Help New Teammates Make Entry
People come and go. The make-up of the group changes. You see a new player brought in, and you may see the substitution break the rhythm of the group. Turnover can be hard on teamwork. Still, newcomers deserve support. It works to the team’s advantage to get them settled in as soon as possible. Do your part to help bring new teammates up to speed. Take them under your wing. Get to know them. Help them get to know the group and how it operates. Find out how they can best contribute to the team’s success then make sure you contribute to theirs. In this regard, whatever goes around definitely will come around.

Help Drive Discipline Into the Group
In high performance teams, the players police themselves. The people don’t rely on somebody else—for instance, the boss, coach, or whoever is in charge, to crack the whip. Team members show superb self-discipline. Individuals hold themselves and each other accountable for top-notch results. The leader shouldn’t have to keep everyone in line. Sooner or later, teamwork comes down to the simple matter of self-control anyhow.

Give Attention To Group Process
Things are always going wrong at some point when people work together in a group. And even when things are going right, a sharp eye can often find ways for them to go better. Pay attention to what’s going on inside your group, and you’ll see problems there that need fixing. If you see behavior that’s hurting performance, have the guts to bring the problem to the rest of the team’s attention in a tactful and professional manner.

Help Create a Climate of Trust
Real teamwork requires people to have trust in each other. The only way you can build that kind of belief is by the way you behave. Will you keep your word? Do you honor your commitments? Are you consistent? Do you spread gossip about other team members? Do you play fair? Do you communicate well with your team members or do you do your own thing apart from the group?
In a climate of mistrust, the risk factor climbs so high it becomes a barrier to cooperative effort. Individuals begin to look out for themselves when they don’t feel protected adequately by the group.

Strengthen the Leader Through Good Followership
No leader is good enough to take a team to high performance if the team members are lousy followers. What’s involved in followership? Initiative- know what to do without being told, and do it. Think for yourself—give yourself permission to take appropriate action. Align yourself with the efforts with the group—No man is an island when it comes to teamwork and followership. Sometimes good followership can mean having enough guts to take a stand against a leader if you may need to argue a point, question your orders, or challenge authority if it is being abused. The key is to do it for the good of the group and the group’s goals and not for personal gain and the sheer joy of being a troublemaking rabble rouser.

Be a Good Sport
Good sportsmanship greases the wheels of group interaction. Poor sports put a strain on the team’s relationship. Good sportsmanship entails showing respect for others without putting them down; being humble yet aware of your strengths and talents you bring to the group; being big enough to ask for help and to say I’m sorry; Having a sense of humor instead of taking yourself too seriously..
